Why You Shouldn't Make New Year's Resolutions

The year 2012 is nearly upon us, perhaps it might already be here by the time that you read this. Hopefully wherever you are, you have a safe and happy New Year’s Eve and Day, as you are recovering from your sins on this day. One thing that many of you are doing is that you are in the process of making the New Year’s Resolution.

My advice is don’t even bother.

New Year’s Resolutions-When Lying to Yourself Becomes an Art form.

You make that new year’s resolution to lose weight, to give up smoking (if only it was that easy, eh), to stop drinking, to be more faithful to your spouse, whatever the New Year’s Resolution is, you make it.

My advice is not to even bother with them. You won’t succeed, you’d be lucky to survive January with your New Year’s Resolution completely intact.

At one time, a more blissful and naïve me made New Year’s Resolutions but I see the light clearly right now. We’re trying to trick ourselves into doing things that we really have no interest in doing. That is not a good motivation for sure. If we don’t have our hearts into something, then the wheels are going to fall off pretty soon.

New Year’s Resolutions are something that you might feel as if you can accomplish something this year. However, those who make New Year’s Resolution really do lack structure for the rest of the year. They don’t really intend to make many more goals other than their flimsy New Year’s Resolution. To me, they feel some form of guilt but obviously are not motivated to do much of anything other than to make a half hearted New Year’s Resolution.

Here’s the thing, you don’t have to wait for a New Year to turn your life around. To give your life purpose, to give it structure. Rather, you can start fixing things right away, at any of the other three hundred and sixty five days of the year. Waiting for one day, to make a half hearted resolution, then you know deep down you don’t really intend to keep really does show a lack of purpose in your life.

Most of all, you are lying to yourself. That is the worst lie of them all, as you are not being true to who you are. You have your problems, your vices, but you know you’re not going to give them up right now. You might make the slightest attempt but it won’t mean much in the end.

In the end, make goals, but don’t make New Year’s Resolutions. They are doomed to fail. Many people will not keep them. The chances of you being in the minority are slim to none. Regardless, have a safe and happy New Year.
