Oh what a tangled web we weave in life. It appears that Mr. Lamar Smith, the man behind the Stop Online Piracy Act, that threatens to utterly destabilize everything in the United States and cause many people to lose their jobs, has in fact committed a no no based upon his own bill. He used a photo and did not properly credit the source on his website. So judging by his own bill, he could be in big trouble.
SOPA...When Laziness Meets Corruption
I've made no bones about SOPA and how it is going to be one of the worst things that could potentially happen to the United States. Obviously this is not the first time Hollywood has tried something so boneheaded, as they fought the VCRs and now they realize that the Internet is taken over.
Make no question about it, piracy is in fact a problem. But the real problem is that in this day and age, with easier accessibility to entertainment, with more choices, Hollywood, the music industry, whatever, thinks they can feed us substandard entertainment at such outrageous prices. Obviously they could put out a better quality content or work harder to embrace the digital age, essentially beating those pirates at their own game.
No, they have to ruin it for everyone and thus this bill came into affect. And the laziness of Hollywood meets the corruption of politicians, who will sell their own mothers for a few bucks for their campaign for the most part. Obviously many of them will support this bill but obviously when there are holes big enough to drive a truck through and loopholes that can easily be exploited by someone malicious enough to go around to other websites, shutting them down in the form of eliminating their competition.
And the fact is that most have committed piracy to some level, even if it was not maliciously and it actually may have benefited various industries. How many people have purchased a DVD set of a television show that they liked, because they enjoyed an episode that they found online? More than Hollywood is willing to admit I reckon. So they are shooting themselves in the foot with that.
And the prisons are overcrowded enough as it is.
Still it finds me great pleasure to see Lamar Smith essentially hoisted upon his own petard. See here's the thing, when you back something, make sure there's nothing that people can dig up on you to make you look like an utter hypocrite. And remember, what is posted on the Internet, is posted for all eternity. Then again, I don't expect someone who seems to lack basic understanding about the Internet would understand one of the bylaws of the Internet. More about this story, here.
